Today’s Modular Home Construction is Energy-efficient and Quality Built

After so many years of excellent modular home construction growth and adoption, I sometimes find it frustrating that confusion still exists over the meaning of this build process. So many people still confuse the term modular home construction with “manufactured home” or “mobile home” (think trailer). They are not one in the same. In fact, there are huge differences between them. A modular home is built off-site, in modules, to the same building code and uses the same materials as a site-built home. When you buy a modern automobile, what characteristics do you use to describe it? Do safe and healthy, energy-efficient, stylish, and quality built come to mind? Now, can you imagine building that same car in your driveway? What if you had to take each tool out of your garage every day and move it out to your driveway to work on the car? Think about the rain getting on your seats and into the carpet. What health hazards would develop as mold and mildew grew in your...

Revolutionary new solar power plant generates energy all day and all night

A new solar plant in Southern Nevada can generate energy both during the day and at night, overcoming what has traditionally been one of the biggest drawbacks to solar power. The Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Plant located about 225 miles northwest of Las Vegas is capable of generating 110 megawatts of power – that’s enough for 75,000 homes. While it’s not running at full capacity quite yet, SolarReserve says the facility is planned to ramp up to its full annual output over the course of 2016. The solar plant uses more than 10,000 mirrored heliostats spread across 1,600 acres to focus sunlight on a 640-foot tall central tower filled with molten salt. That salt is heated by the sunlight to nearly 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit; this stored heat is then used to convert water to steam and drive electricity-producing generators. This system allows the plant to deliver power on demand, not just when the sun is shining. The salt can retain heat for months at a time, so the occasional...

Solar Power – Lighting the Way

WHICH plastic gadget, fitting neatly in one hand, can most quickly improve the lives of the world’s poorest people? For the past decade the answer has been clear: the mobile phone. But over the next decade it will be the solar-powered lamp, made up of a few light-emitting diodes (LEDs), a solar panel and a small rechargeable battery, encased in a durable plastic shell. Just as the spread of mobile phones in poor countries has transformed lives and boosted economic activity, solar lighting is poised to improve incomes, educational attainment and health across the developing world. As previously happened with mobile phones, solar lighting is falling in price, improving in quality and benefiting from new business models that make it more accessible and affordable to those at the bottom of the pyramid. And its spread is sustainable because it is being driven by market forces, not charity. Reprints Phones spread quickly because they provided a substitute for travel and poor infrastructure, helped traders find better prices and boosted entrepreneurship....

Prefab Housing and the Kentucky Derby

As I was watching the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness the past two weekends I noticed how well prepared the horses and jockeys were for the races. Even the mud on the track at the Preakness didn’t stop the horses running all out. The horses were well fed, healthy and well groomed. The jockeys had their silks pressed and the colors were bright. The trainers had prepared the horses and were excited to hear their horse’s name from the loudspeakers. Owners were anxious to see if their horse could win. Bets were placed on every horse. It was Go Time! Then the jockeys brought their horses up to the starting gates and guided them into their starting position. The horses were keenly aware that soon they would be ready to run. Then the announcer said the horse race was ready and the buzzer went off and the horses bolted from the gate. Magnificent! Maybe your horse didn’t Win, Place or Show but it ran the entire race and finished....
